Lewis Abramson (Louie) 1944-2024

It saddens me deeply to hear about Louie’s passing. I guess we are all just reaching the age when this will happen more and more.

Louie was one of my closest friends in our grammar school days at Riverside. Louie and I lived about a block and a half from each other, he on Vallejo Way and I on Fremont way. Just want to tell a brief story from those early days.

Louie was a charmer. Everyone loved him—particularly older ladies, who couldn’t resist him. When we were 11 to 13, we shared out neighborhood paper routes—I the paperboy for the Sacramento Union, getting up at 5:00, folding the papers, delivering them on my bike by throwing toward the porches (but usually missing).  Louie was the paperboy for the Sacramento Bee, delivering at a much easier afternoon time. When he would throw the papers, they would always land just exactly where he wanted them to. [We threw knives at trees as kids—he could stand 10 feet away from a tree with a 3-4“ trunk and stick it in the middle every time—I don’t think I ever hit one]. We made about $30/month from about 60 customers, and then at Christmas time, got big tips—often a dollar (for me)—who knows how much Louie got?

Now the crux of the story. We were required to go around our routes, knocking on every door, trying to get new customers. For me, this was painful. I was shy and just couldn’t get people to say yes. Then there was Louie—the handsome, smart, ever charming, smiling, endearing salesman, with a wonderful knack of convincing someone (particularly the ladies) to say yes.

Louie was an only child of Gussie and Don Abramson. Gussie was a lovely, loving, protective, mom who adored him. Louie could do no wrong. I am sure she played a big role in his developing his positive, confident personality. Little did she know about the boy who would not infrequently get into some kind of minor trouble. But he would get away with anything! Several years or more ago, Louie contacted me. He told me had had a successful career as a police officer. I smiled a big smile.

Louie was a lovely boy, teenager, and man. I may have been more than a little jealous of his outgoing charm, but I loved him.

Rest in peace, my dear friend.
