John I will never forget the time in Hawaii when Mary Harrison, Kathy Moon and myself were leaving on the ship the Matson Lines, we had a party in our stateroom before we left to return to California,  You and your friends ordered all kinds of liquor and left us with the bill.  It was a great party, and you guys barely made it off the ship before we set sail.  You will always be missed,  Rest in Peace, John.

While we were at McClatchy, John was so much a part of the "gang" -- fun, up for just about anything, quiet but also lively.  His family was the only one I knew that built a bomb-shelter in their backyard in the scary 1950's, in preference, it was explained, to a swimming pool which is what other affluent families  in South Land Park were doing at the time (John's father was a gifted surgeon whose skills were in great demand, and I remember they had one of those wonderful Thunderbirds with both  back-seats as well as a front seat -- terrific for double dates!)  I remember him from an early class reunion, still dynamic and attractive, and when I heard about how he died, I was of course shocked but, also, as it was described to me, it all rang true: a man who was living life to the max, and trying to help his family -- pretty close to sainthood. We miss him, and regret that his family has been deprived of the pleasure of his company for all these years.
